Construction Lobby: Lift breaks down causing annoyed millionaire homeowners a long climb to the top.

Luxurious Princess Tower in Dubai stands at 1,355ft tall and has 107 floors
A large fire hose leak on the 96th floor damaged the eight lifts in the building
Residents told they’ll have to climb up to 1,300ft of steps to reach their flats
Repair work is still ongoing while elevator parts are flown in from Finland

Homeowners living in the world’s tallest residential skyscraper are having to climb up more than 1,300ft of steps – the equivalent of walking one-third of the way up Ben Nevis – after all the lifts broke down.
Princess Tower in Dubai, which stands at 1,355ft tall with 97 above-ground residential floors, has been named the tallest residential building in the world Guinness World Records.
But residents living in the luxurious tower block – many of whom are British – have been told they have ‘no choice’ but to walk up to their flats, some on the 97th floor, after all eight lifts in the building broke down last week.
The building, which has six levels in the basement and 101 above ground level, opened in September last year, with two-bed flats on the rental market for £140-a-day and penthouse flats selling for more than £2million.
It is 339ft taller than The Shard, although still dwarfed by the world’s tallest building, the 2,722ft tall Burj Khalifa in Dubai which is not classed as a residential building.

Princess Tower boasts 763 luxury apartments as well as eight giant stores and overlooks the Palm Jumeirah, the manmade ‘palm island’ where David Beckham and Brad Pitt are said to have bought luxury pads.

But after a persistent water leak, the owners of Princess Towers have shut down all of its eight lifts – forcing residents to walk the equivalent of one-third of the way up Ben Nevis – Britain’s highest mountain – which stands at 4,408ft tall.
Emergency repairs are ongoing after the problems began last week – leaving penthouse owners who paid £2millio plus for their flats forced to take the stairs.

Flat owners have today been told that a solitary ‘service elevator’ is available for ‘limited’ trips to the 50th floor – but anyone living above that level will still have to walk the rest of the way.
Bosses at the skyscraper – owned by Tameer estates – say the flooding was caused by water from the ‘passive fire protection system’ and that a ‘faulty fire hose’ was to blame.

A WARWICKSHIRE firm supplying suspended ceilings and partitions has secured substantial new contracts and doubled its turnover.

Taylor Hart Ltd, which is based in Meriden and employs 200 people, supplies and installs suspended ceilings and partitions to high profile developments. Recent new business wins include the prestigious 2 Snow Hill project in Birmingham city centre – new home for law firm Wragge & Co, and the National Football Academy Training Centre, which opened this month and featured a £2.2m investment in drylining alone.

The business has been working in collaboration with the Birmingham office of accountants and business advisory firm Smith Cooper to formulate grant applications and secure bank funding.

This has enabled it to win high profile contracts such as Birmingham University’s Bramall Music Building, Yardley Green Hospital and Sandwell College. The contracts have contributed to a doubling of the firm’s annual turnover in just 12 months.

Having built a strong reputation within the construction industry, Taylor Hart now plans to generate further growth by working with Smith Cooper to secure larger projects, particularly in the housing market.

Will Hart, director at Taylor Hart, said: “The past 12 months have been an unprecedented success for the business as we had the opportunity to work on some high-profile developments across the Midlands. The funding that Smith Cooper helped us secure has enabled us to offer a wider range of services, such as fire protection and structural framework systems, that put us in a better position to tender for these larger projects.

“Whilst the housing market is currently fairly flat there are some signs of improvement and moving forward we plan to widen our target market by building relationships with housebuilders to continue to expand our business.”

He said the involvement with had been key to firm recognising its goals.

Metal Stud Ceiling | Mystery over roof problems of £5m bus station

Council bosses left baffled by a problem with the roof of Norwich’s £5m bus station which left its main building water damaged have warned bus users they could face even more disruption before it is fixed.

The bus station only opened seven years ago and was hailed as a state-of-the-art landmark for the city, but the ticket office, toilets and cafe there have been shut for more than a month because of a leak in the futuristic-looking canopy roof.

Officers at Norfolk County Council admitted they will not know what has gone wrong with the structure until they dismantle the suspended ceiling.

Attempts to do that have been scuppered a number of times because of rain, but with a better forecast for tomorrow, the intention is to shut the station to carry out that work and make a short-term fix.
But council bosses said, while that ought to mean the ticket office, cafe and toilets can re-open on Monday, a more permanent repair could lead to more closures in the future.
