Fire Protection Services, what are they?

Passive fire protection services are the methods by which barriers to fire are created to slow and contain the rate at which fire spreads within buildings. By installing fire resistant walls, partitioning, floors, doors and ceilings, the spread of fire can be effectively impaired, so helping to prevent the ultimate collapse of the main structure of the building.

Passive Fire Protection

Protecting Property from Fire

A former care home owner has been given a 12-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to fire safety breaches.

Richard Dickinson, who lives in Runcorn, admitted three counts of breaching a fire safety order before Chester Crown Court in December. An investigation into the Rangermore care home revealed major shortfalls in fire safety which led to this prosecution, according to the Knutsford Guardian.
Six pensioners in the Knutsford care home were trapped in a serious blaze and had to be rescued from the first floor of the care home in October 2010.

Keith Brooks, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service’s (CFRS) head of community fire protection, said: “The fire at Rangemore care home could, without doubt, have ended in tragedy if it had not been for the actions of the fire crews who attended that night.”

“We welcome the sentence handed out by the court as this was a serious breach of fire safety regulations which are designed to prevent this kind of event and protect life,” he added.

Mr Brooks added that the CFRS was available to support businesses in their quest to operate safely, but would take action when fire safety was neglected. CFRS regularly carries out inspections to ensure that businesses comply with the necessary fire safety regulations.

Passive Fire Protection Methods | Panasonic Systems

Passive Fire Protection Methods: An addition of the EBL512 G3 and EBL128 systems for fire protection to the Professional Camera Solutions business unit has been introduced by Panasonic System Communications Company Europe (PSCEU).

Over 30 years of experience and designed to accommodate both large and stand alone system requirements, the EBL512 G3 is able to connect 30,600 devices through 30 control panels with 4 detector loops each, whereas the EBL128 is a smaller stand alone loop system which can connect up to 255 devices. Extra components may be incorporated within the system including Fire Brigade Panels and other display units, which may be connected to each control.

The fire alarm systems have also been integrated with the WV ASC970 virtual matrix so that fire detectors and cameras can interact. The two systems are connected via TCP/IP using the WEB-server module.
The devices may be any combination of:

Analogue smoke & heat detectors
Water proof heat detectors
Addressable manual call points
Addressable short circuit isolators
Addressable I/O units (inputs / supervised voltage outputs as well as relay outputs)

Construction companies Birmingham. Injuries could be caused due to poor construction work as a result of late payments to subcontractors, an inquiry led by a Greater Manchester MP has heard.

The issue was highlighted during the late payments hearing chaired by Debbie Abrahams, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, last month.

A construction professional claimed that corners had been cut by small contractors because they had not been paid for their work.

Subsequently, this was creating a legacy of ‘sick buildings’ that may put lives at risk because of construction work not being completed properly.

Steve Sutherland of Dortech, a Yorkshire glazing contractor, said: “Some of the buildings I’ve seen being built are shocking, are dangerous, and will eventually result in deaths of people.”

He explained that following the economic downturn contractors desperate for work began quoting low prices, and were attempting to cover their losses by ‘screwing’ smaller contractors brought in to assist with work.

Andy Fisher, North West Regional Secretary for the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians (UCATT), said the industry was ‘fraught’ with issues of late payments, particularly within glazing companies and the dry-lining industry.

Three women and three children who died in a fire caused by a faulty television set could have been saved if basic fire safety checks had been carried out on their flats, an inquest ruled today.

Southwark Council missed ‘numerous opportunities’ to check fire safety at Lakanal House in Camberwell, south London, before a blaze killed six people there in July 2009, jurors decided.

Catherine Hickman, 31, Dayana Francisquini, 26, and her children, Thais, six, and Filipe, three, were killed in the blaze along with Helen Udoaka, 34, and her daughter Michelle, who was just 20 days old.

In six narrative verdicts read out at Lambeth Town Hall today, jurors agreed that the flats had inadequate protection to stop the spread of fire from one home to another.

Fire safety issues could have been spotted in major works during the1980s and again between 2006 and 2007, it was heard – and the replacement of asbestos window panels with non-fireproof ones in 2006 had a ‘serious impact’ on how the blaze spread.

Reading out the narrative verdict, a juror said: ‘There were numerous opportunities to consider whether level of fire protection was adequate.

Asbestos Neglect – Landlord AND Agent fined

Two companies have been prosecuted after workers were exposed to potentially deadly asbestos fibres at a mill in Bolton.

The Health & Safety Executive took legal action against Hazelwise and RH Property Management after finding dozens of damaged asbestos boards stacked up at Brownlow Mill during a visit on 20 October 2010.

Manchester Crown Court heard on Friday that neither company put a plan in place to manage the asbestos in the mill on Tennyson Street, where several small businesses rent units.

HSE became aware of the issue when a contractor on the site raised concerns that asbestos insulation boards had been stripped out of unoccupied floors at the mill, releasing potentially deadly asbestos fibres into the air.

Inspectors issued two Prohibition Notices banning the removal of tools and other items from four floors of the mill in case they had become contaminated with asbestos fibres, and preventing access to the floors.

They also found that asbestos was present in other parts of the mill, occupied by tenants, but nothing had been done to protect it and make sure it was safe.

The court was told the letting agent, RH Property Management, had raised the issue of the lack of an asbestos assessment in 2006 but did not take any further action. The owner of the mill, Hazelwise, also failed to arrange for an asbestos survey to be carried out.

Both companies pleaded guilty to a breach of the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974 for failing to ensure the health and safety of people at the mill. Hazelwise also admitted a breach of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 by failing to properly assess the risks from asbestos at the site.

Hazelwise, of Mauldeth Avenue in Chorlton, was fined£40,000 and ordered to pay £8,969 in prosecution costs. RH Property Management, of Greek Street in Stockport, was fined£15,000 and with costs of £11,011.

Speaking after the hearing, HSE Inspector Philip Strickland said: “Workers at Brownlow Mill have been exposed to potentially deadly fibres because neither company did anything to find out where asbestos was on the site.

“It is a legal requirement for owners and letting agents of commercial properties to carry out an assessment as to whether asbestos is present in a building, and what action is needed to keep it safe.
“If employers don’t take the risks from asbestos seriously, then thousands of people will continue to die in the UK every year as a result of breathing in asbestos fibres.”

Asbestos boards were commonly used up until the 1980s to help insulate buildings, to build partition walls and as ceiling tiles. The boards only become dangerous if they are broken up and asbestos fibres are released into the air.

Fibres that are breathed in can become lodged in the lungs or digestive tract, and may lead to lung cancer or other diseases if large numbers of fibres are inhaled. However, symptoms may not appear for several decades.

Around 4,000 people die every year as a result of breathing in asbestos fibres, making it the biggest single cause of work-related deaths in the UK.
