The event was held at the Dorchester Hotel, London and was attended by around 600 members and guests of The FIS. The awards recognise, promote and encourage high levels of craftsmanship in the finishes and interiors sector.

Taylor Hart won the Gold award in the Plastering category, sponsored by Nevill Long, for the work carried out at The University of Birmingham, West Midlands. This is the fifth time Taylor Hart have won an award in the last six years of this annual event being held.   

The FIS summarized the entry:

‘Taylor Hart were engaged by Interserve Construction Limited to install SFS, drywall, ceilings, acoustic rafts, partitions, specialist plastering including Sto internal render, traditional sand and cement, two coat plastering and fine finishes to Fermacell linings.

The centre piece to the project was the Olympic sized swimming pool which is now the largest pool in Birmingham. Around the pool Taylor Hart installed 9m high walls to exacting standards and finishes as required in such a corrosive environment.

The project started in December 2014 and took 29 months to deliver, with many challenges especially with design development to overcome. Materials from Echophon, SAS, Hunter Douglas, CEP, British Gypsum, Fermacell, Sto and distributed by Go Interiors contributed to a very successful project.

During the course of the project labour levels peaked at 60 operatives with a site management team of three.’

Managing Director, Phil Lewis collected the award along with Site Manager, Lance Lloyd.

Over 363 Training Courses since August 2015

Since August 2015 to November 2017, THL have ensured Site Operatives, Site Supervisors and Apprentices etc have undertaken between them 363 training courses along with 50 NVQ’s being achieved. All training is provided to both direct employees and labour only subcontractors.

Increasing Spend on Staff Training

THL are able to receive grants for some of the staff training, however THL have still gone above and beyond by spending at least 75% more money on training than they have been able to claim back in available grants.

Apprentices & Graduate Trainees

Taylor Hart Limited are committed to helping young people enter into the construction industry, they do this by employing Apprentices and Graduate Trainees. Crucially, once an apprentice achieves their NVQ there are plenty of opportunities available for them to progress further with their career; this being either through site supervision or academic courses in Quantity Surveying or Estimating.

Studying at Birmingham City University

Since September 2014, the company have employed 24 apprentices, 6 of these having already qualified as tradesmen and a further 4 due to complete in June 2018. We currently have 3 Graduate Trainees undertaking a Bachelors Degree or a Higher National Certificate. The trainees are given day release every week to attend their studies at Birmingham City University.

High Priority in 2018

Staff training remains a high priority for the company in 2018 with courses already being secured for staff to attend within the first four months of the year.  Employees are able to make requests for training at any time, approval being given if the course is able to develop their learning needs and skills; the training fits well with the company business plan for the next few years ahead.

Established by former minister The Rt Hon David Curry in 2010, The Parliamentary Review’s September release is now a key fixture in the political calendar.

Taylor Hart Ltd features alongside the Prime Minister and a small number of outstanding organisations in a document that looks back on the year in industry and Westminster. The main aim of the Review is to showcase best practice as a learning tool to the public and private sector.

Across all policy areas, The Parliamentary Review is sent to over half a million leading policymakers. The articles in the Review act as both a blueprint for success and a template for reform.

The Prime Minister commented that ‘this year’s Parliamentary Review follows a significant year in British politics’ and this is reflected in the articles from leading journalists and best-practice representatives alike.

The PM’s former cabinet colleague, Sir Eric Pickles, who was recently appointed Chairman of the Review, said ‘it has never been more important for government to hear the views of business and the public sector in a constructive forum. It is also a vital time to share best practice and progress.’

More and more companies are starting to embrace construction industry green initiatives and Taylor Hart is no different. When working with gypsum plasterboard, partitions and drylinings there can be elements wasted, so construction industry recycling initiatives are important. Companies also need to comply with waste regulations.

The plasterboard recycling machine could be mobile so that it can be based anywhere and reduce waste on site.

Plasterboard is made from an inner layer of gypsum that is sandwiched between two layers of lining paper. It is this gypsum layer that makes it particularly important to ensure that the plasterboard is recycled.

The reason for this is that when gypsum is disposed of with other biodegradable waste, it can produce hydrogen sulphide gas.

Currently all waste containing identifiable gypsum-based materials such as plasterboard must be separated out for recovery or recycling. This has several benefits, in that it reduces the amount of waste going to landfill, reduces the chance of toxic and odorous hydrogen sulphide gas developing, and also cuts down on the amount of gypsum extraction that is required, as more is being re-used.

The Benefits of a Plasterboard Recycling Machine

The plasterboard recycling machine would mash gypsum plasterboard to enable it to be used immediately. Old methods of working would involve using more resources, with old materials going into a skip before being transported elsewhere to potentially be recycled.

The new plasterboard recycling machine would miss out a stage, meaning that materials can be recycled into new materials immediately and be ready for re-use as new plasterboard.

Not only will this make life easier in the construction industry, but it cuts down on travel costs and carbon emissions when waste is transported to a recycling plant.

This is quite a big issue in the construction industry, which generates a lot of waste both in terms of materials going to landfill and in terms of transport costs and emissions produced in moving the waste around the country.

Both construction companies and waste management organisations are keen to reduce the high volumes of waste, increase the number of recycling initiatives in the industry, and make manufacturing of materials more efficient.

Once an investor is secured, Taylor Hart’s on site plasterboard recycling machine will help create a step-change in the industry for this particular stage in the construction process.
