A ceiling can often be an overlooked element in a room or open space, however, with the right eye for design, a room can be transformed into a unique and cutting edge space. Our suspended ceiling fitting experts explain how:

How can suspended ceiling fitting be used to improve a working space?

“When clients approach Taylor Hart, they are looking for advice and expertise; whether that’s beginning with our specialist design team, or a quote based on their own design and drawings. Our team will advise on the most cost effective, functional and durable product for a particular project, from a range of materials and applications. Suspended ceiling fitting is a specialist skill, and with 20 years’ experience and a wide range of industrial, commercial and domestic projects under our belt, we are able to supply and fit both standard and bespoke ceilings that will not only look amazing, but will stand the test of time and provide protection against fire and improve acoustics. A suspended ceiling will discreetly conceal cabling and pipework and house lighting and heating systems.

When considering a suspended ceiling fitting scheme, disruption and costs are often a major consideration. A suspended ceiling can be fitted with minimal disruption and is a cost effective and maintenance free solution. Ceilings can be incorporated into an existing scheme and can be used to create beautiful lines, curves and bends in all manner of shapes and sizes. The flexibility of the product means that suspended ceiling fitting forms an integral part of any design project; with the correct lighting to create a relaxing ambiance or direct lighting to highlight a feature or create a vibrant space, our suspended ceiling fitting team have transformed buildings into unique spaces.

By creating a streamlined ceiling, whether standard and practical or unique and eye-catching, a room can be designed, decorated and lit to bring about a specific atmosphere to improve working spaces, and the health and safety of employees. A working space can be designed with function in mind; a space to relax; an area to be creative and formulate ideas; a place for focused, bright light. Whatever the purpose, budget or size of project, our suspended ceiling fitting team can supply and fit a ceiling for you.”

Call us today on 01676 522422 to discuss your requirements. We are happy to answer any queries with regard to suspended ceiling fitting, or indeed any other service within our range, including mineral fibre ceilings. Visit our website, from where you can send an enquiry form if you have any specific questions regarding our products.

Fire Protection Services, what are they?

Passive fire protection services are the methods by which barriers to fire are created to slow and contain the rate at which fire spreads within buildings. By installing fire resistant walls, partitioning, floors, doors and ceilings, the spread of fire can be effectively impaired, so helping to prevent the ultimate collapse of the main structure of the building.

By effective planning and design, fire resistant materials and products can be installed in corridors, stairwells, rooms and roof cavities to retain and slow the spread of fire without the use of electronic equipment or monitors. By slowing and containing the spread of fire from the originating room until emergency services arrive, the resultant damage can be dramatically reduced and more importantly, occupants have time to safely evacuate the building.

Our passive fire protection services include the protection of structural steel and incorporate fire resistant boards, dry linings, mineral wool and intumescent coatings which expand when heated to seal gaps or protect materials. For example, in the event of a fire, such fire prevention systems would trigger to seal gaps in fire doors, or seal-in electrical consumer units and switches; also expanding to protect flammable materials such as wood and plaster, and so reducing the spread of harmful smoke.

Taylor Hart provides professional passive fire protection services advice to both the commercial and domestic sector and have a wealth of experience to share with their clients; they are mindful that minimum fire protection standards are set to protect us in our homes and places of work and will work with your project’s fire engineer or follow Approved Document B (ABD) to ensure that safety standards are met.

Call our expert team today on 01676 522422 to discuss your requirements. We are happy to answer any queries with regard to fire protection services. Visit our website www.taylorhart.co.uk, from where you can send an enquiry form if you have any specific questions regarding our products and services, including partitions and drylinings.

If you own a commercial property, you know that there are a million and one things to think about on a daily basis, from staff issues to management to the everyday tasks that keep the business ticking along. But what about the actual building you and your staff are in? Your first priority is to keep everyone safe from as many things as possible – one of the scariest, of course, being the possibility of a fire breaking out in the building. You’ll have the usual equipment in place, but what else can you do to ensure the safety of your business and your employees?

Fire Protection – Passive

One thing you can do is to hire the services of a company who specialise in passive fire protection. This is a form of protection that functions in the event of a fire without requiring either manual or automatic initiation of its operation – very useful if there is a fire in the building and your first priority is to evacuate all staff members. In this case, several methods are used to protect structural steel, including fire resisting boards, dry linings, mineral wool, and intumescent coatings.

A survey of the building will first have to be conducted, as building regulations require certain periods of stability and compartmentation measures in order to limit the spread of the fire and in order to provide secure, unblocked escape routes. The priority here is to protect the life of your employees – not their property – and so high levels of protection must be provided.

Protecting Property from Fire

A former care home owner has been given a 12-month suspended sentence after pleading guilty to fire safety breaches.

Richard Dickinson, who lives in Runcorn, admitted three counts of breaching a fire safety order before Chester Crown Court in December. An investigation into the Rangermore care home revealed major shortfalls in fire safety which led to this prosecution, according to the Knutsford Guardian.
Six pensioners in the Knutsford care home were trapped in a serious blaze and had to be rescued from the first floor of the care home in October 2010.

Keith Brooks, Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service’s (CFRS) head of community fire protection, said: “The fire at Rangemore care home could, without doubt, have ended in tragedy if it had not been for the actions of the fire crews who attended that night.”

“We welcome the sentence handed out by the court as this was a serious breach of fire safety regulations which are designed to prevent this kind of event and protect life,” he added.

Mr Brooks added that the CFRS was available to support businesses in their quest to operate safely, but would take action when fire safety was neglected. CFRS regularly carries out inspections to ensure that businesses comply with the necessary fire safety regulations.

Dry Lining Company

The Chief Fire Officers Association ( CFOA ) has launched a new seven-step guide to help businesses ensure their premises are fire safe.

The Business Safety Strategy 2013-16 affects all properties where there is enforceable fire legislation in place and aims to achieve the CFOA ‘s objective of a business and community sector that sees no deaths or injuries from preventable fires, bringing losses down to an all-time minimum and ensuring there are consistent enforcement and advice practices.

CFOA will ensure it is involved heavily with businesses, including those at the multi-national level to local firms, to ensure they are aware of their responsibilities and understand the regulatory framework which they must abide.

“The changes in fire safety legislation over the last two decades have resulted in differing approaches to enforcement and the advice offered to businesses has varied in a similar way,” the report says, and the document is addressing the challenges that remain in light of these alterations through the seven-step guidance.

The first priority is to promote firefighter safety and expert operational decision-making through ensuring incident commanders have the right information on the built environment.

Next, the CFOA is to compose a framework of qualifications and competence, which will affect protection officers, managers and fire engineers. Thirdly, using clear processes and appropriate staff development, the organisation will ensure legislation is applied in a consistent manner.

Two companies have been prosecuted after workers were exposed to potentially deadly asbestos fibres at a mill in Bolton.

The Health & Safety Executive took legal action against Hazelwise and RH Property Management after finding dozens of damaged asbestos boards stacked up at Brownlow Mill during a visit on 20 October 2010.

Manchester Crown Court heard on Friday that neither company put a plan in place to manage the asbestos in the mill on Tennyson Street, where several small businesses rent units.

HSE became aware of the issue when a contractor on the site raised concerns that asbestos insulation boards had been stripped out of unoccupied floors at the mill, releasing potentially deadly asbestos fibres into the air.

Inspectors issued two Prohibition Notices banning the removal of tools and other items from four floors of the mill in case they had become contaminated with asbestos fibres, and preventing access to the floors.

They also found that asbestos was present in other parts of the mill, occupied by tenants, but nothing had been done to protect it and make sure it was safe.

The court was told the letting agent, RH Property Management, had raised the issue of the lack of an asbestos assessment in 2006 but did not take any further action. The owner of the mill, Hazelwise, also failed to arrange for an asbestos survey to be carried out.

Both companies pleaded guilty to a breach of the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974 for failing to ensure the health and safety of people at the mill. Hazelwise also admitted a breach of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 by failing to properly assess the risks from asbestos at the site.

Hazelwise, of Mauldeth Avenue in Chorlton, was fined£40,000 and ordered to pay £8,969 in prosecution costs. RH Property Management, of Greek Street in Stockport, was fined£15,000 and with costs of £11,011.

Speaking after the hearing, HSE Inspector Philip Strickland said: “Workers at Brownlow Mill have been exposed to potentially deadly fibres because neither company did anything to find out where asbestos was on the site.

“It is a legal requirement for owners and letting agents of commercial properties to carry out an assessment as to whether asbestos is present in a building, and what action is needed to keep it safe.
“If employers don’t take the risks from asbestos seriously, then thousands of people will continue to die in the UK every year as a result of breathing in asbestos fibres.”

Asbestos boards were commonly used up until the 1980s to help insulate buildings, to build partition walls and as ceiling tiles. The boards only become dangerous if they are broken up and asbestos fibres are released into the air.

Fibres that are breathed in can become lodged in the lungs or digestive tract, and may lead to lung cancer or other diseases if large numbers of fibres are inhaled. However, symptoms may not appear for several decades.

Around 4,000 people die every year as a result of breathing in asbestos fibres, making it the biggest single cause of work-related deaths in the UK.
