He said it was among industries where “local talent is locked out of opportunity”.

“Far too many British firms in construction today find it is in their interests to hire foreign-trained workers, rather than to train up workers from Britain themselves,” Mr Miliband said in a speech on immigration policy to think tank the Institute for Public Policy Research.

Labour would take action against employment agencies that claimed to provide labour only from overseas, he said.

“[They] boast all their workers are Polish or denigrate the talents of those who are living locally [which] isn’t right,” said Miliband.

“It’s happening because it is a part of our economy that has not been subject to sufficient rules and regulations.”

We at Taylor Hart have been busy throughout the last year improving the way we carry out our drylining. We are always striving to be more efficient, to reduce costs and waste. We have done this through our new way of working which embraces Modern Methods of Construction and utilizing off site production.

It goes without saying that the last twelve months have been some of the most challenging and difficult times for the Construction industry, but there seems to be some light at the end of the tunnel. Lockdown restrictions are easing, the vaccination programme is going well.

Hopefully Construction will get back to some normality and we can start to see the return of the projects that were put on hold by the COVID-19 pandemic. We look forward to being able to meet up with all new and existing customers over the next few months.

The event was held at the Dorchester Hotel, London and was attended by around 600 members and guests of The FIS. The awards recognise, promote and encourage high levels of craftsmanship in the finishes and interiors sector.

Taylor Hart won the Gold award in the Plastering category, sponsored by Nevill Long, for the work carried out at The University of Birmingham, West Midlands. This is the fifth time Taylor Hart have won an award in the last six years of this annual event being held.   

The FIS summarized the entry:

‘Taylor Hart were engaged by Interserve Construction Limited to install SFS, drywall, ceilings, acoustic rafts, partitions, specialist plastering including Sto internal render, traditional sand and cement, two coat plastering and fine finishes to Fermacell linings.

The centre piece to the project was the Olympic sized swimming pool which is now the largest pool in Birmingham. Around the pool Taylor Hart installed 9m high walls to exacting standards and finishes as required in such a corrosive environment.

The project started in December 2014 and took 29 months to deliver, with many challenges especially with design development to overcome. Materials from Echophon, SAS, Hunter Douglas, CEP, British Gypsum, Fermacell, Sto and distributed by Go Interiors contributed to a very successful project.

During the course of the project labour levels peaked at 60 operatives with a site management team of three.’

Managing Director, Phil Lewis collected the award along with Site Manager, Lance Lloyd.

Over 363 Training Courses since August 2015

Since August 2015 to November 2017, THL have ensured Site Operatives, Site Supervisors and Apprentices etc have undertaken between them 363 training courses along with 50 NVQ’s being achieved. All training is provided to both direct employees and labour only subcontractors.

Increasing Spend on Staff Training

THL are able to receive grants for some of the staff training, however THL have still gone above and beyond by spending at least 75% more money on training than they have been able to claim back in available grants.

Apprentices & Graduate Trainees

Taylor Hart Limited are committed to helping young people enter into the construction industry, they do this by employing Apprentices and Graduate Trainees. Crucially, once an apprentice achieves their NVQ there are plenty of opportunities available for them to progress further with their career; this being either through site supervision or academic courses in Quantity Surveying or Estimating.

Studying at Birmingham City University

Since September 2014, the company have employed 24 apprentices, 6 of these having already qualified as tradesmen and a further 4 due to complete in June 2018. We currently have 3 Graduate Trainees undertaking a Bachelors Degree or a Higher National Certificate. The trainees are given day release every week to attend their studies at Birmingham City University.

High Priority in 2018

Staff training remains a high priority for the company in 2018 with courses already being secured for staff to attend within the first four months of the year.  Employees are able to make requests for training at any time, approval being given if the course is able to develop their learning needs and skills; the training fits well with the company business plan for the next few years ahead.

With any dry lining project comes the necessary paperwork. It’s the site managers job to make sure all the appropriate paperwork is completed in the correct order and in a timely manner. Whilst everyone knows it’s necessary, it’s not always a favourite part of the job!

When we heard about a new app that was supposed to help make the paperwork process a lot easier, we decided to try it out. 

How Does The Trappco App Help Our Partitions and Dry Lining Project On Site?

Trappco is a mobile app designed to speed up the required on-site paperwork.

The easy to use App interface was created to streamline and automate the process of filling out all manner of site based paperwork. This includes Handover and Scope of Work documents to general Health & Safety Inspection Certificates. Trappco say that anyone who has a check sheet style document to complete and authorise will benefit.

That’s a considerable claim. We’ve tried other apps for paperwork before. But the makers of Trappco have really thought about how to make theirs stand out from the rest.

• Being able to use our own document templates and layouts. This means the resulting documents produced by the app look like our own and not one that we have selected from a universal and general template list native to the app. 
• The App interface can capture authorising signatures in real time, giving our documents a powerful new auditable history.
• The usefulness of being able to associate a number images or photos with a document means they are embedded permanently in the final PDF doc, so no need for stapling print outs to documents.

Compliant & Agile

The Trappco app is already saving us time and providing a no frills, simple solution to the ever-increasing issue of completing, authorising and managing onsite paperwork. It’s helping Taylor Hart to remain both extremely compliant and agile.

Taylor Hart Site Manager, Russ Gretton, who is currently working on the Bishops Gate project and who has been trialling the app, had this to say:

“Using the Trappco App saves me all of the back office admin work I used to have to do to bring together my handovers with photos etc.”

Streamlining Our Processes

He also went on to explain that the project’s overall Site Managers, Vinci Construction, are finding it useful too. Russ, who cc emails necessary paperwork to them from within the app said they are impressed with the speed at which they are now receiving the inspection documents. More importantly it is their own Partition Inspection sheet, presented as a PDF with embedded images. Meaning that Vinci no longer had to transfer the information into their own records.

Cost Effective

Rendering is the process of covering an exterior wall of a building with a layer of wet material that dries to form a protective layer. Exposed stone and and brick work is prone to erosion when left open to the elements. Rendering is a cost effective solution to counteracting the effect of the elements and protecting most types of masonry from moisture and the cold weather.

Grown In Popularity

Render is traditionally composed from a sand and cement mix. However, with advances in technology and changes in style and taste, different coloured render products such as through coloured render have grown in popularity.

What is Through Coloured Render?

Through coloured render is a sand, cement and lime based type of render containing White Portland cement with an added pigment, to give it its colour.

No Need For Painting

Its name refers to the fact that the pigment, and therefore the colour, runs throughout the material. The render mix itself is already coloured with the colour permeating all the way through. Unlike traditional sand and cement render mixes, there is no need to for it to be painted.

Colored render is a recent and popular development for several reasons.

Three Reasons Why You Should Consider Through Coloured Render On Your Next Building Project

1. Aesthetics

Firstly, this type of decorative render is aesthetically pleasing. A wide range of colour variations can be achieved as can a number of different finishes. Through coloured render can be scraped, scraped with Ashlar cuts, stone or textured.​​​​​​​ It’s an increasingly popular finish on modern house builds, such as in the image below showing cream render applied to the house on the left:

2. Ease of Application

Through coloured render is supplied ready mixed and can be applied in a one coat finish. It can be applied to almost any type of masonry. Whilst the material costs of through coloured render can be higher than traditional sand and cement, its much lower associated labour and ongoing maintenance costs make it a very cost effective solution. Coloured render is virtually maintenance free and usually guaranteed for ten years by the manufacturers.

Cement and sand render is more labour intensive as there are more stages in the application process. It is normally mixed on site and requires 2-3 coats of application. First, one to two base coats need to be applied. Each of these are scored whilst still wet so that subsequent coats can adhere to them. A top layer is applied more thinly and given a shiny finish, ready for painting. In order to protect it and make it weather tight, traditional render has to be painted with a finishing coat of a proprietary external masonry paint.

3. Durability

The formulations of through coloured render tend to be have improved durability properties than traditional sand and cement. Whilst it is cheap on materials, sand and cement has a tendency to crack if the underlying structure moves.

Through coloured renders tend to have additional components added to their mix which improve their hardiness. Polymers or Acrylics are common additions. These increase the flexibility and extend the life of the render by making it less prone to cracking and, in some cases, making it self cleaning too.

Monocouche Renders

Monocouche Renders are a type of through coloured render originating in Europe that has become very popular in the UK. The white cement mix of Monocouche Renders is pre-coloured to a shade of your choice. Not only do they provide a decorative finish as well as a weatherproofing layer, they have an additive that makes them more flexible to help eliminate cracking. They can also be self-cleaning.

Sto is one such manufacturer of this type of render. As part of our work as drylining contractors for the University of Birmingham’s new Sport Centre, we applied stunning Sto render.
